Lockard and White selected to design and engineer next-generation wireless networks for the WEC Energy Group

College Station, Texas — 9/2/2021

Lockard & White, a leading provider of network and telecommunications engineering services to critical infrastructure providers, has been selected by the WEC Energy Group to design and engineer the next generation of 2-way Push-To-Talk (PTT) and low-latency wireless non-line-of-sight (NLOS) point-to-multipoint radio systems.

“Helping clients like WEC plan and engineer the wireless networks of the future that integrate them seamlessly into their diverse and dynamic business is what we do best. We are thrilled to be selected by WEC and look forward to working with their team,” said Lauren Alfonso, Chief Executive Officer for Lockard & White.

WEC Energy Group is evaluating an upgrade of the current PTT communications systems as well as the NLOS point-to-multipoint systems that support their gas and power distribution networks. As the WEC Energy Group consists of multiple companies that were acquired or merged at different times, the existing radio systems are comprised of multiple vendors, technologies, and frequency bands. This project seeks to consolidate each of these systems into a single solution for each of the PTT and NLOS radio systems across WEC Energy Group’s seven (7) subsidiaries and operating territories throughout Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan.

“After completing a long-term planning process to examine the needs of the company’s next generation wireless networks, the WEC evaluation team identified several key business drivers for its wireless voice and data networks”, explained Steve Liegl, Director Infrastructure and Operations at WEC Energy Group. “These included the need for a technology refresh, expanded coverage & capacity and supporting the operational integration of multiple business units.

"Lockard & White was selected to lead this effort on behalf of WEC after a rigorous evaluation process due to their long history of successful execution with projects of this size and scope.”
